That Game We Never Play
The Great Games
The Great Games are a bizarre series of sporting events at the heart of a festival within Pembrooktonshire held once every generation. The Games pit a group of young men, all from the most socially important families, and engaged to marry the daughters of the most socially important families, to compete to death for the honor of appeasing the Mountain Spirits.
The winner is the first young man to die. His fiance is then clothed in the finest garments and jewels, and taken up a nearby mountain to be sacrificed to the Mountain Spirits. The two lovers are reunited in Heaven.
The townsfolk love all the pomp and pageantry of the The Great Games and the whole thing is seen as very positive and good. The families of the tragic lovers consider it to be a great honor and privilege to be the ones “chosen” to appease the spirits.
